A small miracle happened a few days ago. I actually left the house earlier enough that I was able to stop for coffee on my way to work. Normally I make it at home or hope that someone in the office has made a pot and will take pity on me. But this morning I was early and I had Starbucks gift cards that my dad gave me for Christmas, so I was on my merry way to get my tall peppermint mocha. (So.damn.good!!)
I had heard about people in the drive thru paying for the cars behind them as a random act of kindness and I thought "you know what? I have $50 in Starbucks cards. It will take me forever to spend it since I never leave the house on time, why not share?" I pull up to the window to get my cup of heaven and the cashier tells me the car in front of me paid for my drink! Said she told them to tell me to have a good day. I was so flustered I didn't know what to say. I damn near forgot that was my plan in the first place. I finally was able to tell her that I wanted to pay for the people behind me and to tell them to stay warm.
That experience put a smile on my face for the whole day. I didn't plan on paying for a stranger's coffee with the expectation it would come back to me someday, so for it to beat me to the punch got me thinking. If something as small as a cup of coffee can make someone's day, why don't we do more things for people? It doesn't have to be huge deal. Do what you can afford and a lot of things can be done for free. The world is full of inconsiderate asshats and a lot of times I feel like I'm losing faith in humanity. Imagine how much better the world would be if we stopped thinking about ourselves and did just a little something extra to make someone smile. They could be having the worst day ever and you could be the person to turn it around. Little things can be life changing. Sometimes they can be life saving.
Do you want to be remembered as making people smile, or do you want to be remembered as being the asshat?
